rs762551 is a single nucleopeptide (SNP) encoding the CYP1A21F allele of the CYP1As gene. The CYP1A2 enzyme is encoded as the CYP1A2 gene in humans, and belongs to the cytochrome P450 superfamily. Along with other enzymes in the CYP superfamily, the rs762551 SNP is cited as being associated with xenobiotic (xeno-forgien, bio-life) metabolic functions. Specifically the SNP has been reported to be associated with caffeine metabolisim.

Caffeine is one of the most widely used stimulants in the world, with roughly three quarters of US adolscents and adults consuming caffeinated beverages daily. Any psychotropic drug with pervasive use warrents study and indeed many papers have investigated caffeine consumption.

I am genotyped as rs762551(A;A). The rs762551(A;A) genotype is described as fast caffeine metabolization. For those who know me this probably doesn’t come at a surprise, I’ve been known to drink as much as 8 cups (64oz) of coffee (1.2g!) throughout the workday (which suspiciously averages to one cup per hour). I like to think that I now only drink about 30oz of coffee per day but of course my milage varies.
